Canadian Chamber of Commerce Commercial Diplomacy Project

Background:

New market opportunities are emerging in Africa, Asia and Latin America, but evidence shows that Canada is falling behind other OECD countries in capturing them. To help close the gap, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is undertaking a new project that’s looking at federal programs and strategies intended to support Canadian businesses in emerging global markets and recommending ways to make them more effective for Canadian firms.

The Chamber’s Commercial Diplomacy Project will produce a 20-page report outlining key policy recommendations, supported by a promotional campaign and meetings with senior government officials to present the findings and recommendations.

Benefits to CAIDP:

As a Gold Sponsor, CAIDP is contributing $2,500 in cash to the project – as well as our unique expertise in international development. Our sponsorship lets us provide input to the report; our name will also appear on the report and all other documents developed for the project.

Market research is important to CAIDP’s advocacy work and a key element of our organizational strategy. However, with our limited resources, it’s been difficult to undertake that research on our own. This project lets us leverage a modest investment for an opportunity to provide inputs into federal policies and programs, such as the Global Commerce Strategy and those of the new Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade & Development (DFATD).

While the scope of the report is broader than that of our own industry, participating will help us ensure that the particular concerns of international development professionals are well integrated into the work. It will also give us the opportunity to strengthen our strategic alliance with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce by collaborating on those concerns we do share. In addition, having our name on the report and other documents will increase our visibility among policymakers and other influencers.

Calling on CAIDP members!

The study is currently underway and member consultations will continue through December 2013. A first draft of the report is due in December and CAIDP will participate in two rounds of review. The final report will be released in March 2014.

We encourage CAIDP members to contribute to the project, either individually or through CAIDP, using the means below. Please be sure to mention your membership in CAIDP to allow us to leverage our influence on the report!
