Baastel’s Contribution to the SDGs

Le Groupe-conseil baastel ltée (Baastel), a firm dedicated to consulting and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) advisory services in the international development realm, has been contributing to sustainable development since 1989.

Our work focuses on three main branches of sustainable development:

  • Social equality – we have carried out consulting mandates in the areas of governance, poverty reduction, gender equality, health, education, food security, humanitarian assistance and conflict resolution;
  • Economic development – some of our mandates have concentrated on themes related to microcredit, private sector development and promoting sustainable living;
  • Environmental management – a core aspect of our work addresses issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, agricultural development and disaster risk management and reduction.

Our company’s products and services have a positive impact on many sustainable development goals (SDGs). One of the most evident being SDG 17 “Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development”. By providing quality consulting services to clients worldwide (including international agencies, multilateral and bilateral organizations, foundations, non-governmental organizations and governments all around the world), Baastel has positioned itself as a leader in the fields of monitoring, evaluation, results-based management (RBM) and training, in particular related to planning for the achievement of, monitoring, implementation and reporting on the SDGs. As a Canadian management consulting firm in international development, Baastel is at the forefront of working with United Nations (UN) and other donor/development partner agencies and countries around the world to improve and refine the management approaches that governments use to advance the SDGs in their respective countries. Baastel, for example, has worked with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ Division of Sustainable Development to develop an adapted version of RBM, a widely used performance management approach, that allows governments to better promote integration and inclusion, two of the core principles of the 2030 Agenda. The capacity building solutions that Baastel developed were adapted into online curricula hosted and promoted by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the UN System Staff College (UNSSC). Our firm has also trained officials from a number of countries, including Belize, Colombia, Ethiopia, Honduras, Togo, Turkey and Uganda, in planning, management, and monitoring approaches that can better promote the core principles of inclusion and integration in policy-making and performance management. Thus, Baastel has developed and provided tools, resources, and skills to help national governments better define, mainstream, and advance their national sustainable development strategies and plans. As another example, Baastel is currently working with the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) to identify emerging practices in both monitoring and evaluation of the 2030 Agenda in the Asia Pacific Region. Baastel is looking to identify national champions and showcase best practices to facilitate learning from experience across countries.

Our core skill sets, experience, and reputation worldwide have us also furthering the objectives set under SDG 13 related to Climate Action. SDG 13 specifies that the: “Implementation of the Paris Agreement is essential for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and provides a roadmap for climate actions that will reduce emissions and build climate resilience.” The involvement of Baastel and its experts in the implementation of the Paris Agreement, through support to the implementation of multiple Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), for example, and the assistance our firm has provided to access climate finance (Global Environment Facility [GEF], Green Climate Fund [GCF], Adaptation Fund, etc.), are other important aspects of Baastel’s contribution to the SDGs.

One of the most important lessons learned from our work has been about the value of global cooperation. Since each country must address its own unique realities and contexts, there is no single solution to grounding the global framework of the 2030 Agenda at a national level. Each country faces unique challenges in adapting and striving towards the SDGs. Nevertheless, in working with different national governments, academics, and other experts, we see how a unified global effort to share experiences and learning across different contexts has the power to mobilize the knowledge and resources required to implement the 2030 Agenda.

As countries continue to take action on the SDG and as the 2030 Agenda evolves, Baastel will continue to provide state-of-the-art knowledge, tools, and skills necessary for decision-makers, managers and local stakeholders to make enlightened decisions and take leadership in implementing their visions and priorities for sustainable development.
