Feature Speaker: DARREN SCHEMMER, Vice-President: Partnership With Canadians Branch, Canadian International Development Agency
Originally from Regina, Darren is a former teacher and diplomat who fell in love with travel as a child. His first overseas experience on his own was with Canada World Youth right after high school. It was a revelation. Living in Haiti was a real eye-opener, seeing the challenges people faced every day,” he recalls. “It made me want to do more.”
Darren joined CIDA in 1989, working mainly in Americas Branch, and he served in several postings overseas. More recently he has served as High Commissioner to Ghana and Ambassador to Togo.
Darren has embarked on a whole new adventure as Vice-President of the Partnerships with Canadians Branch (formerly Partnership Branch). In a major announcement in July 2010 he spelled out the changes to the program: increasing citizen engagement, streamlining processes, aligning programming with the Agency’s priorities – all of these are part of the long-term evolution of partnership programming.
Darren has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta and a Masters of Business Administration from Royal Roads University. He is married with three sons and lives in Ottawa.
