Big Solutions for the Small-scale: The Artisanal Gold Council (AGC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the opportunities, environment, and health of the millions of people involved in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining in the developing world, and in doing so, improving the global gold sector.

The Artisanal Gold Council has embarked on two five-year projects in Peru and Indonesia, funded by a contribution from the Canadian Government. The projects are aimed at the improvement and sustainable development of the artisanal and small-scale gold sector. The projects are focused on achieving improvements in mineral processing, environment, business, health and social practices for men and women involved in the sector.  The AGC is also working on a number of other similar projects in the artisanal gold sector globally. Job Summary

The Artisanal Gold Council is looking for a Program Manager to join our exciting team working on projects in South America, Asian and Africa.  You will be based in Victoria and willing to travel internationally.  You will have international work experience in developing countries and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You will have strong development experience, technical skills, and a basic understanding of some of: geology, mining practices, development and aid, social outreach and environmental science. You will present yourself professionally and have the ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders, from artisanal miners in developing countries to local and national level governments.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsibilities could include the following, but in all cases will include strong management and oversight skills:

·       Provide training and develop small and medium enterprise capacity in the country of the project

·       Understand and formalize the status of miners in country

·       Set up small business opportunities for miners

·       Work closely with regional and local governments to create an enabling environment

·       Work closely with other AGC specialists to reach project goals

·       Build and manage the responsible gold supply chain

·       Forge and maintain links internationally with upstream and downstream elements in the supply chain

Knowledge/Skills

·       Basic understanding of geology, mining practices, environmental science, international development

·       Strong technical skills

·       Strong writing and communication skills

·       International experience working in development/developing countries

·       Understanding and application of local to national level policy and legal documents

·       Ability to work with, and present oneself professionally to a broad range of stakeholders including local partners, funding agencies, artisanal miners, and local and national level governments

Desired Qualifications

·       Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline

·       Fluency in written and spoken English is essential .  Ability in French or Spanish is an asset

·       Willingness to travel (significant field time)

·       Comfortable managing using a range of IT tools
