About The Position

The Accounting Manager is a member of the TFO Canada team, works particularly closely with the Book Keeper and reports to the Executive Director. The role also liaises with the part-time Finance Director.

In supporting the Executive Director and the TFO Canada team, the accounting manager will be responsible for oversight of the accounting department including the preparation of financial reports, budget management and forecasting, the preparation of draft reports, periodic government filings and direct supervision of the book keeper. The Accounting Manager will also liaise with TFO Canada’s auditors with respect to the annual audit and to keep abreast of accounting and financial management matters in the non-profit sector, of relevance to TFO Canada.

Working within a team environment the Accounting Manager will perform the following duties:

  • Direct and organize all general accounting activities.
  • Prepare accounting and financial reports and ensure accurate accounting systems and record keeping.
  • Maintain the general ledger and all related accounts with proper documentation and records of all transactions
  • Prepare and analyze financial reports and travel claims to ensure compliance with relevant policies and contracts’ terms
  • Direct supervision of the Book-keeper including HR and individual performance objectives
  • Ensure incoming revenues, reports, invoices, and requests for advances are accurate and complete; follows up on overseas transfers
  • Prepare, process and review entries to the general and subsidiary ledgers to assure accuracy and compliance with the organization and established accounting principles and in accordance with GAAP for not-for-profit organizations
  • Develop and manage the chart of accounts to reflect TFO Canada’s activity and support approved budget
  • Responsible for monthly and year end closing of the general ledger including preparation of journal entries
  • Responsible for maintaining the accounting system, backup control, assisting staff with questions and generating required reports and statements for organization
  • Prepare interim, year-end and comparative financial reports including monthly or quarterly projections; performs and provides analysis of current results to prior periods and/or budget
  • Prepare required government and other reports as directed by the Executive Director and respond to inquiries as required
  • Stay current with developments, practice trends and promulgations in the accounting profession; monitors accounting system and recommends new or revised policies and procedures
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliation for all accounts; verifies accuracy of bank statements and resolve questions or problems; maintains integrity of cash balances and cash flows • Responsible for review and processing of payroll and reports by outside payroll service
  • Maintain fixed asset records and control; determines depreciation terms/rates to apply to capitalized items
  • Preparation of the year-end audit working papers and documentation for independent auditors, liaise with independent auditors
  • Establish financial policies and procedures, ensuring proper and adequate internal controls are in place
  • Support the Finance Director in preparing financials and select KPIs to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.
  • Support the Finance Director in managing the Finance Committee activities • Responsible for supporting and informing procedures related to the annual budget process • Maintain other accounts and performs other accounting duties as required or as requested by the Executive Director

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Eight years of accounting-related work experience, preferably in a non-profit environment
  • Strong technical accounting skills and knowledge
  • Solid financial operations management skills
  • Experience in producing financial reports for Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada – DFATD)
  • Experience producing timely and accurate financial reports

General business management experience Education:

  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with appropriate specialization in accounting;
  • Professional certification from a recognized accounting association (CPA, CGA, CMA)
