Finance Director (part-time, contract) 

TFO Canada is currently recruiting for a part-time (approximately 10 days per quarter) Finance Director. The successful candidate will support the Executive Director and Board of Directors with financial management of the organization including quarterly and annual financial reporting, budgeting and periodic financial reports required for TFO Canada’s projects funded by the Canadian government (Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development). In supporting the Executive Director, the Finance Director will review the financial reports prepared by, and provide advisory support to, TFO Canada’s full-time Project Accountant who is responsible for bookkeeping, budget management and preparation of draft reports as well as periodic government filings. The Finance Director will also liaise with TFO Canada’s auditors (currently KPMG) with respect to the annual audit and to keep abreast of accounting and financial management matters in the non-profit sector, of relevance to TFO Canada. 

The Finance Director will also make presentations periodically to the Board of Directors and he/she will support the work of the Board’s Audit Committee. The Finance Director may also be called upon to support the Executive Director and the Programs & Partnerships Director with financial aspects of proposal development. 

It is expected that the part-time Finance Director will complete most of his or her work from their home office with periodic, but regular, meetings with the Executive Director and the Project Accountant at TFO Canada’s offices in downtown Ottawa. For that reason it is expected that this individual will be located in the National Capital Region. The Finance Director is expected to make available for this assignment their own computer, compatible with the Microsoft Office and accounting software used by TFO Canada. 

Qualifications: 

  • A relevant university degree, preferably at the Master’s level, and a professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA) 
  • At least ten years of non-profit financial management experience including budgeting and preparation of financial reports for Boards and external users 
  • Several years of experience preparing financial reports for contribution agreements with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (formerly the Canadian International Development Agency) 
  • Prior experience as an auditor is preferred 
  • Excellent and advanced Microsoft Excel skills, preferably with experience developing and maintaining macros (Visual Basic) 
  • Experience working with small business accounting packages (TFO Canada uses “AccountEdge”) 
  • Excellent presentation and written communication skills 

Compensation:
