About Health Systems Global

 

Health Systems Global (HSG) is a diverse, global membership organization of researchers, decision-makers and implementers who are dedicated to promoting health policy and systems research (HPSR) and knowledge generation.

HSG is managed by the HSG Secretariat that moved to the Canadian Society for International Health, based in Ottawa, Canada in 2021.

HSG currently contracts its communications duties to the Institute of Development Studies in the UK. This contract will be ending in April 2021 after a transition period with the successful applicant.

Position Overview

Position Title:     Communications and Advocacy Director

Location:            remote, however must be available to work in the Eastern time zone

Time commitment:         4 days per week

Salary commensurate with experience and aligned with market conditions

 

Summary:

  • Development of communication strategies for all HSG activities and projects, as well as the Global Symposia;
  • Management and oversight of HSG digital platforms and Social Media;
  • Leading on the design and delivery of HSG communications products;
  • Development of campaigns to support Advocacy efforts led by the HSG Board.

 

Role Specific Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

  • Lead the Communications and Advocacy activities in delivering high-quality communications materials: social media and website content, public relations documents, events, etc.
  • Provide quality control of external and internal-facing communications, publications and digital content (social media, website, press releases and newsletter)
  • Lead the development of the HSG annual communications plan
  • Provide updates to HSG stakeholders and identify opportunities to improve engagement with members
  • Analyze the success of communications activities according to key performance indicators
  • Lead the development of briefing notes, speaking notes and presentations as required
  • Manage communications officer duties in relation to HSG requirements

 

Digital Media

  • Oversee the creation of stand-out digital marketing campaigns to promote HSG’s different service areas e.g. through the use of compelling content, email marketing, videos, webinars, infographics and photography
  • Oversee the HSG website to ensure it remains current with information related to industry news, events, projects and services

 

Media Relations

  • Proactively reach out to the media around HSG activities
  • Develop media talking points for HSG Board and senior leadership team
  • Draft op-eds on behalf of HSG Board and senior leadership team and copy edit-key

Event Support (HSG Symposium)

  • Assist the Event Manager with the development of in-person and digital events
  • Coordinate diverse regional communications plans around the Global Symposia and working group events

 

Advocacy and Partner Relations

  • Support the Advocacy Committee of the Board to produce effective messaging and materials
  • Work with advocacy consultants, partners and coalitions on the development and execution of communications strategies and deliverables
  • Collaborate with industry partners and funders on events, campaigns and publications

 

Education & Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in communications or journalism program
  • 8 years or more proven working experience in a communications and/or advocacy role(s)
  • Experience within a global health organization and specifically Health Policy and Systems Research is highly desirable
  • Fluency in English is essential
  • Ability to speak Spanish and/or French is desirable
  • Ability to work remotely, however be available in the Eastern Time zone is required
  • Ability to travel to the Global Symposia and Board meetings when required
