A technological boost for weak health systems and maternal and child health, with e-health expert Richard Gakuba.

Improving maternal and child health is a key aim of the Millennium Development Goals. Health systems in most developing countries are not up to task, however, and resources to improve them are scarce. Dr Richard Gakuba, national e-health coordinator for Rwanda’s Ministry of Health, believes that information technology could help these countries overcome the challenges healthcare systems face. Drawing on Rwanda’s wide experience with these technologies, he will discuss how they can help deliver better care and save lives.

Dr Richard Gakuba, director of eHealth in Rwanda’s Ministry of Health, has been spearheading the development of eHealth in Rwanda. He led the process of developing a five-year national eHealth strategy, and is now leading its implementation. The eHealth strategy involves deploying various technologies from the central to the remotest areas of the country.
