Member comments on tax breaks for military serving overseas: what about development professionals?

Submitted by nicko2 on 19 May 2017

Interesting coverage in the G&M today about the Minister of Defence announcing tax breaks for military members who serve overseas.  I guess Global Affairs Canada staff get similar breaks, but I have never seen any consideration of extending this to people who work in development…beyond the preferential treatment for IDRC employees, that is.

Also interesting in the G&M article is the observation by Conservative defence critic:

Taxes

Taxes are complicated for Canadians working overseas, and the average Canada Revenue Agency employee is not going to be able to answer your questions. As a result many subscribers contact the CAIDP-Hub every year looking for advice.

Dealing with Canada Revenue Agency and Taxes on UN Income

Submitted by admin on 22 April 2011

I am consulting mostly with the UN system and keep hearing that this revenue is NOT taxable. However, trying to dig into the CRA web site, I cannot find any tax treaty between Canada and the UN system and my accountant keeps it in as part of my taxable income. Would anybody know of such thing? Or would you know the ruling on income say from UNDP, FAO, World Bank, etc.?

You may have to live outside of Canada

Submitted by admin on 23 March 2009
Hello Jean-Jo and all, When I inquired about this a year or so ago in relation to some World Bank work, at the time I was told that whether you are taxed on UN earnings depends on whether you earn them while in Canada or abroad. The tax exemption kicks in only if you live outside of Canada for a certain period of time - I think it is three months or more. Regardless I believe you have to report this income in your tax return. The Revenue Canada web site probably has this information, as does the International Tax Office. Sophia Huyer

Declare on line 104 and Deduct on line 256

Submitted by admin on 23 March 2009
All of this is non taxable under tax treaty (you will not likely find the tax treaty however). You have to declare it in line 104 and the deduct it in line 256 (use the income worksheet and deduct under Employment with a prescribed international organization). Do not make the mistake I used to make by declaring it as other income line 130 which triggers an inquiry. You must have all documentation to back it up but need not attach it. Also very important you cannot file electronically if you have income from a prescribed international organization this will also trigger an automatic review.
