Position Summary

The Board of Directors of Cooperation Canada seeks a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the national association of Canadian organizations working in international development and humanitarian assistance.

The sector is in a moment of unprecedented change and the CEO will have the opportunity to lead the organization and support the sector as it navigates an exciting phase of collective work and evolution. This includes overseeing and supporting the Official Development Assistance Task Force, ongoing work on the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse, the development and implementation of anti-racism in cooperation framework, and advancing the sector’s understanding of and commitment towards decolonization and Indigenous reconciliation.   In this role, the incumbent will serve as a key public voice for the sector with government and the media on issues of global poverty, aid and international cooperation, the role of civil society globally, and Canada’s role in the world.

Cooperation Canada enjoys an extraordinary level of support from its members as it continues to expand engagement for sector progress.  The CEO works in close partnership with the Board of Directors elected by members to establish strategic directions and organizational priorities.   With an annual operational budget of $2M and a current staff of 15 employees, the CEO has overall responsibility and accountability for the effective management of Cooperation Canada and the fulfilment of its mission, strategic directions and objectives. The CEO is responsible for maintaining positive relationships with members, government officials, and other stakeholders, and acts as a principal spokesperson for Cooperation Canada.

This role requires a highly dynamic and visionary individual with proven leadership, coalition building and management abilities.   The CEO abides by and is a strong supporter of the Cooperation Canada Code of Ethics.   The CEO will be an effective communicator in both official languages with strong interpersonal skills that contribute to successful relationship building both within the Cooperation Canada team, as well as with key stakeholders.   The CEO will draw on innovative thinking and resourcefulness in order to seize opportunities built on sector priorities, securing the funds necessary to meet Cooperation Canada’s goals, and expand its activities in service of member priorities.   Overall, the incumbent will be strategic and articulate a vision for the sector, inspiring others to join in delivering on that vision.
