POSITION SUMMARY
The Canadian Council for International Co-operation (CCIC) is Canada’s national coalition of international development and humanitarian organizations working to achieve sustainable human development. Our members some from across Canada and represent the wide diversity of actors in the international cooperation sector, from faith-based and secular groups to labour unions, cooperatives and professional associations.  CCIC seeks to end global poverty and to promote social justice and human dignity for all.    We play a critical role in ensuring that the Canadian international cooperation organizations work in a catalytic and strategic way to create and enhance the conditions for ambitious Canadian investments in global development cooperation. To support this mission and vision, CCIC hosts a fully bilingual position (ENG & FRE) for a Media and Communications Officer (MCO) is responsible for public communications and media relations. The MCO is the primary contact point for media and manages all elements of our public communication in both official languages.
 
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications Coordination – Initiate communications about CCIC activities and provide planning and expertise to requests from other departments and members for communication materials:

  • Provide overall coordination to the creation of communication materials, working closely with other departments and member staff. This includes supporting major CCIC initiatives such as our annual conference and campaigns we undertake.
  • Liaise with member communication staff to coordinate messages and activities.
  • Stay current with international development and humanitarian issues in the world, and develop responses as appropriate, in consultation with other staff.
  • Stay up to date with work of research and policy department and issues facing international development and humanitarian sector in Canada and globally.

Media Relations

  • Develop and maintain relationships with media across Canada. This includes TV, radio, newspapers, bloggers, denominational media, etc. Ensure timely responses to media requests.
  • As required, act as organizational spokesperson and perform interviews on behalf of the organization.
  • Provide media with ideas for stories about international development and humanitarian issues and CCIC.
  • Write and submit op-eds in the name of CCIC’s CEO
  • Support members with media interview training/prep, as required. May include organizing occasional trainings for members.

 Digital Media

  • Oversee CCIC’s social media strategy and create content for CCIC’s social media accounts.
  • Advise on social media risks and threats.
  • Manage any paid, promoted posts.
  • Keep up to date on trends in social media usage and advise organization on trends and strategy.
  • Manage, compile and send digital newsletter.

Materials development – Produce print, electronic, and audio/visual materials to communicate with donors, volunteers, member constituencies, the general public, media and other stakeholders:

  • Research, produce (ex. write, record), edit and publish the annual report, CCIC newsletters, and podcasts.
  • Manage the development of audio/visual materials.
  • Copyedit and ensure consistency across organizational communications.

Website Support

  • Initiate and manage development of website content in consultation with web manager.
  • Ensure content on CCIC websites is timely, accurate and consistent in style.
  • Ensure content is written for web audience.

Member relations

  • Maintain relationships with member communications and marketing staff.
  • Collaborate with member communicators on shared projects.
  • Visit/Meet individual member communicators once a year.
  • Coordinate a community of practice of CCIC member personnel working in media relations and communications.

Communications Planning

  • Respond to requests from internal departments for communications materials.
  • Lead planning and implementation process for new communication projects (web pages, special projects, etc.)
  • Develop and maintain CCIC Media and Communications Guide (style, talking points, etc.)
  • Work closely with Member Engagement Officer and graphic designer/web manager on workflow planning and communications products.

Team Participation - Participate fully and positively in the work of the Public Affairs and Member Services Department and support the work of other departments.

Other

  • Contribute to the effective use and implementation of CCIC’s contact management system.
  • Working with the designer and the resource coordinator, create signs, brochures, and other fundraising and communication materials as required.
  • Assume other duties as requested.
 
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Essential:
  • Fully bilingual in French and English (written and spoken);
  • University degree or equivalent experience in communications, journalism, or other relevant field;
  • Media and Press relations experience;
  • Experience in developing and implementing media and social media strategies;
  • Excellent writing, editing, presentation and communication skills;
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and work under pressure;
  • Capacity to work in a self-directed manner, collaborate in a team, and to seek advice as required;
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills.
 
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of development and humanitarian issues;
  • Knowledge of federal Canadian political system;
  • Experience with video/audio recording and editing;
  • Familiarity with online video conferencing systems.
