ABOUT THE JUSTICE EDUCATION SOCIETY (JES)

The Justice Education Society of British Columbia (JES) is a non-profit organization with over 30 years of experience providing public legal education and justice system capacity building in Canada and overseas.  In Canada, JES helps more than 700,000 British Columbians learn about our justice system and address their legal issues. THE CONTEXT

Through its international program, JES has become a global leader in sustainable capacity building for professionals from the justice sector, with courses taught by world-class subject matter experts using innovative train the trainer and problem-based learning methodologies. Recently, JES introduced a blended learning platform JESed, which allows for the delivery of remote learning courses in criminal analysis, major case management, anti-corruption, trial preparation, and victim services, among others.

THE ROLE

The Instructional Design Assistant’s role is to assist in the creation and improvement of JES’ education courses for the international program. The Instructional Design Assistant will work as a part of a Design Team, alongside an Instructional Design and Subject Matter Experts.

This position involves using a variety of technology tools, writing, editing, organizing and filing technical and course documentation including course materials and guides; and performing other related duties as required.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Execute a variety of administrative, clerical and technical functions to assist the Instructional Designer.
  • Provide research assistance for the development of course materials, including country contextual reports, background information and course-specific subject matter.
  • Work with subject matter experts to complete various responsibilities identified in the instructional design process according to the work plan.
  • Review, edit and update course materials to ensure that content is accurate, properly referenced and well written.
  • Develop course materials into a presentation format that is professional, consistent with JES style guides and engaging for learners.
  • Seek out the appropriate resources necessary to support the development and delivery of learning activities.
  • Assist with the development, editing and review of instructional materials, accessible documents, videos, and/or other resources for online courses in JES’ Open edX platform.
  • Support in the delivery of courses, participant registration and program coordination.
  • Assist as needed with presentations, workshops, and special events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

TRAVEL

Domestic and international travel may be required.

THE PERSON

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English and Spanish (verbally, written and comprehension).
  • Proficiency in instructional design technologies, Microsoft Office Suite and G Suite.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to an evolving work environment.
  • Able to follow directions and coachable. 
  • Ability to take direction, initiate action, and work as a team member in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment with minimal supervision.
  • Experience keeping written records of meetings, classroom observations and discussions with experts. Consistency in the application of institutional criteria (linguistic and pedagogical).
  • Ability to effectively organize work activities, with attention to details, and prioritize task completion according to schedules and goals.
  • Minimum one (1) years of experience working on international development projects.
  • Familiarity with discussions on gender, ethnicity and sexual identities as they might take place outside and inside the Global North.

Preferred

  • Minimum one (1) year demonstrated experience in instructional design in an academic institution or related setting or related field. 
  • Experience with e-learning platforms and other multimedia-enhance educational tools.
  • Surveys, evaluations and data analysis.
  • Training or previous project work in gender and/or minority rights.

Education

  • A degree in Education, Sociology, International Relations, International Development, or related degree or its equivalent in knowledge and experience.
