Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) is recruiting for a Technical Director, Market Systems to join our team. The Technical Director, Market Systems will have organization-wide responsibility within the Market Systems technical area to build capacity, develop strategic approaches, document best practices, mentor staff and oversee the provision of technical support to all of MEDA’s programming. A priority will include working with the Director, Knowledge Management to ensure technical expertise in this area is shared across the organization.  In addition to leading a technical area, the Technical Director will also retain senior project management responsibility.
 
Job Status:  Full-time, permanent
Start Date: May 1, 2018
Location(s): MEDA Headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario is preferred. Ottawa & Washington are options
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Technical Expertise (50%)
  • Develop and maintain cutting edge technical expertise through various activities including: teaching engagements, consulting assignments, publications, and other industry contributions
  • Cultivate and coordinate a team of technical experts within MEDA for this technical area and ensure effective knowledge sharing for this expertise across MEDA through regular workshops or technical development fora – convening colleagues who seek to advance their technical skills in this area to deepen both individual and MEDA industry leadership
  • Explore new and innovative products and stay abreast of new advancements in the industry
  • Along with the Director, Knowledge Management, develop a plan to mentor, share knowledge and disseminate technical information throughout the organization (webinars, lunch and learns, blogs, trainings etc.)
  • Provide technical support to Senior Directors for ongoing business development and management activities
  • Review and evaluate new proposal opportunities and prepare or contribute to proposals as required across all MEDA’s programming
 
Senior Project Management (50%)
  • Ensure an environment which allows for effective management and delivery of contracts and consulting assignments, including visiting programs, managing short term consultants and providing direct consulting
  • Contribute technical expertise to program descriptions, annual work plans, annual budgets, M&E/gender/environment plans, and ensure execution of the specific technical component in contract deliverables
  • Finalize and submit financial and narrative donor reports that are accurate and timely
  • Ensure field-level technical expertise is provided for project execution
  • Provide effective staff management as required
 
REQUIREMENTS:
 
Education:  University degree, ideally a Masters, in Business Administration, International Economic Development or related field
 
Experience: Proven track record of at least ten (10) years in project management and/or delivering consulting services
 
Technical: Proficiency in the Market Systems Technical Area as demonstrated through active project management, teaching, participation in the industry, writing, leadership etc.
 
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
 
  • Appreciation and support of MEDA’s faith statement, values and goals
  • Willingness to undertake extensive international travel
  • Understanding and appreciation of business principles, international development and MEDA’s approach of creating business solutions to poverty 
  • Private sector experience and/or demonstrated entrepreneurial drive to apply business principles in new and innovative ways
  • Familiarity with bi- and multi- lateral government agencies, donors, non-governmental organizations and other development agencies
  • Excellent skills in building relationships, networking and presentation, negotiation and interpersonal communication
  • Proficiency in a foreign language is an asset
