CAIDP-CCIL 2018 Conference
A lot has changed since our last conference in 2016 (see the 2016 Conference Report). Back then we were coming to grips with a transition from Millenium Development Goals to the new, more universalist, Sustainable Development Goals We were asking, “is there a new era dawning”?
Eighteen months into their implementation, we are a little wiser to the ways the SDGs touch our lives in the Global North and South and to the challenges they pose to development practitioners in government, the private sector and civil society.
In mid-2017, Canada announced an overhaul of its foreign policy priorities in diplomacy and defence, in trade and in international development. Calls for wider inclusion, new institutional alignments and renewed emphasis on rule of law are steeped within these policies. All are deemed necessary for a better, safer, more just, more prosperous, and sustainable world
And so, here we are at the 2018 Conference theme, "Gender Equality, Inclusive Governance and the Law: Aligned for a Better World" This is a conference designed for us to examine what is “dawning” in Canadian foreign policy and in particular what’s in the new Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP)
This year, we are thrilled to be collaborating with the Canadian Council on International Law, another practitioner constituency deeply invested in how Canadians participate on the world stage.
As always, CAIDP is committed to bringing you a conference focused on the topics you want to discuss and features impressive speakers, hands-on training, keynote lunches and ample networking opportunities.
Our conference addresses issues in the global context and their implications on Canadian development professionals. The conference offers practical information, advice and connections you need to succeed in our complex world.
This year's conference will feature three key streams:
Canada’s new Foreign Policy
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a watershed in the global development agenda. The pledge to leave no one behind relates closely to three important dimensions of the 2030 Agenda: poverty, inclusiveness and inequality. The Feminist International Assistance Policy outlines the Canadian government feminist approach to international assistance, as focused on delivering a human rights-based and inclusive policies and programs, challenging unequal power relations to best empower girls and women. Canada is launching a new Development Financing Institution. How does Canada’s foreign policy support us to deliver our commitments under the SDGs and how will we as professionals help this effort? Find out during high level discussions featuring many key thinkers.
Skills and Tools
The Skills and Tools stream offers workshops that prepare international development professionals for the challenges ahead. Featured this year are changes in development evaluation and opportunities for legal professionals to contribute to inclusive governance, the rule of law and other underpinnings of development.
Partnering and Finance
Again this year we ensure that members have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with our influential speakers and draw from the experiences of those who have learned to navigate the system. Global Affairs Contracting specialists will talk about upcoming opportunities and changes in processes to contracting with the department. Doing business with international development institutions and non-traditional partners is also feature. This stream is a must for anyone looking to be successful in international development.
